Musica Latina: An outdoor concert with Perla Batalla

Singer-songwriter Perla Batalla will perform in an outdoor concert on Friday, April 27, at 5:30 p.m. on Elm Tree Lawn, Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³». The Los Angeles native combines traditional Mexican folk melodies with blues and jazz elements to create a unique sound.

The event is sponsored by the Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts in Pasadena and Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» alumna Elizabeth Levitt Hirsch ’74. The concert is free and open to the public. Guests are invited to bring a picnic dinner or purchase a meal at an outdoor buffet for $7.

Perla Batalla gained international attention as a backup singer for Leonard Cohen and performed with such well-known artists as k.d. lang and The Gypsy Kings before launching a solo career in 1993.

Batalla’s father, a singer, and her mother, a small record store owner, surrounded her with the sounds of her Mexican heritage as well as the music of John Coltrane and Muddy Waters. In a recent review, the Los Angeles Times heralds Batalla as a “born storyteller with a rambunctious sense of humor.”

The Levitt on the Lawn concert series at Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»serves as a prelude to the summer events at the Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts in Pasadena. Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» alumna Elizabeth Levitt Hirsch sponsors the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»concert series to give back to the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»community and increase awareness of the summer concerts at the Levitt Pavilion.
